My lips feel parched and tight. Better not force any movement and risk rupturing the delicate skin or what’s left of it. I want to open my crusted eyes, but my lids are barren of any moisture, I have none left to spare. The night didn’t bring any sustenance or rain. Just a cold dry chill, nothing hopeful, no relief. I can’t move. It feels like cool rough sand under my cheek, interrupted by jagged shards of slate poking, uninvited. The sun is rising over the barrenness of my predicament. I can sense some warmth teasing the back of my head. Sunrise… a few brief moments of hope before the scorching power of the sun beats down on my dehydrated carcass. A vultures shrill beckoning across the cavern? Likely the invitation to breakfast, I think I’m invited, but not as a guest. I have to try again, I must move my body. I scrape my eyes open in one last attempt to find the moisture to keep me alive. I can do this… I have to do this… My eyes struggle to focus, there, what is that? So small and judgemental. A flower, just beyond my grasp. How can life sustain in such a place? If this Violet can survive this wasteland surely I can too. It’s so stunning, a soft purple blooming from the dust, sunlight tickling its petals, an obscure layer of dust settled on its face. It doesn’t seem to mind. What beauty, I have never experienced such beauty in a colour, Dusted Violet. I feel like that violet now, forgotten, but still alive under a fine crippling dust, barely hanging on, threatened to be extinguished by lack of water… I need water…
